Module Indicative Content
This module will cover key elements in equality and diversity as this relates to policies and practices in the UK and will include a European perspective. The development of human rights and their application to individuals will also be examined alongside the keg legislation and case law. Topics to be covered conform to National Occupational Standards for legal advice SFJIB5
Key issues will include :-
- Equal opportunities, concepts of equal opportunities, the need for equal opportunities - evidence of structural inequality, good practice, problems of implementing policy
Consideration of legislation and case law. Current issues, proposals and policies on the following protected groups
- Race
- Sex and gender
- Disability
- Age, religion and belief, sexual orientation and transgender.
The work of the regulatory bodies
- The influence of Europe on UK legislation and case law
- Development of UK legislation

22 hours - lectures
10 hours - tutorials available for group or individual support
20 hours - On line Blackboard lectures including interactive exercises and activities
Guided Independent Study: (248)
70 hrs - Preparation for scheduled sessions and follow up
88 hrs - Independent study and wider reading including searching web based resources
90 hrs - Preparation for and completing the assignment
Module Additional Assessment Details
1. A case study assignment 2500 words (70%) contributes to all LO's
2. Students are required to undertake assessed on line discussions - 700 words (weighted 30%) which contributes to all LO's
Formative Assessment - Tutor feedback will be provided in class from the tutor and peer discussion. Also via the online seminar discussion forums and via email and telephone responses to tasks and exercises.
Students will be provided with detailed feedback on their assignment plan
