Module Details
Module Indicative Content
This module will cover key elements in equality and diversity as this relates to policies and practices in the UK and will include a European perspective. The development of human rights and their application to individuals will also be examined alongside the key legislation and case law.

Key issues will include :-

- Equal opportunities, concepts of equal opportunities, the need for equal opportunities - evidence of structural inequality, good practice, problems of implementing policy

Consideration of legislation and case law. Current issues, proposals and policies on the following protected groups.

- Race
- Sex and gender
- Disability
- Age, religion and belief, sexual orientation and transgender.

The work of the regulatory bodies.
- The influence of Europe on UK legislation and case law
- Development of UK legislation
Module Additional Assessment Details
1. Students are required to undertake assessed on line discussions - 1,500 words (weighted 30%) which contributes to all LO's

2. An assignment plan - 500 words [0% weighted pass/fail]

3. An essay of 3,000 words (weighted 70%) contributes to all LO's

Formative Assessment / feedback:
Tutor feedback will be provided via the online seminar discussion forums, and via email and telephone responses to tasks within the module.
Students will be provided with detailed feedback on their assignment plan

Module Learning Strategies
This is a distance learning award, and the Blackboard VLE will provide a structured framework for the delivery of this module.

Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (5 hours)
2 hours - Telephone tutorials with the tutor
3 hours - Scheduled discussion forums

Guided Independent Study: (295 hours) this will be made up of:
Preparation for tasks and online discussions; Wider reading including exploring additional sources of information, (particularly web based), updating their knowledge in line with developments and changes
Reading study materials, asynchronous online seminars, interactive tasks
Preparation for and completing the assignment

This module will cover key elements in equality and diversity as this relates to policies and practices in the UK including a European perspective. The development of human rights and their application to individuals will also be examined alongside the key legislation and case law. In this module you will consider key issues in relation to equality and diversity and critically evaluate the impact of legislative provisions and case law in relation to protected groups, including race, sex, disability, age, religion and belief, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, marriage and civil partnership and gender reassignment.
