Module Details
Learning Outcomes
1. Collect analyse and interpret results and communicate findings in an appropriate format
Learning Outcomes - Analysis, Communication, Enquiry

2. Present an informed argument on a current scientific issue that enables the general public to gain an understanding of the issue sufficient to make reasoned and evidenced based decisions.
Learning Outcomes - Knowledge, Communication, Enquiry, Application

3. Communicate a topical scientific discovery with a non-scientific audience and to reflect on the approach that is taken to achieve understanding by that audience.
Learning Outcomes - Knowledge, Reflection

Additional Assessment Details
DATA ANALYSIS - 500 words to assess outcome 1 (20%).¿

GROUP PRESENTATION (format of presentation to be decided by the group: poster/PowerPoint/podcast/blog) - 15 minutes presentation or 1500 words dependent on format to assess outcome 2 (40%).¿

LEAFLET - 1000 words to assess outcome 3 (40%)¿

Additional Assessment Information:¿
Students will be required to complete 3 pieces of summative assessment, namely analysis of data, a group presentation (format to be decided by the group) and a leaflet.

Timing of the assessments will be staggered to hopefully ensure that the student workload is spread throughout the year.¿
Indicative Content
The module provides you with skills to communicate science to your fellow peers, fellow professional scientists and the general public. Science communication will be analysed to identify where you are in your scientific journey and what skills you require to improve your ability to effectively communicate important scientific content to a range of audiences. Within this module you will work with tutors and fellow students on topics that are relevant to the public understanding of science.

You will gain skills in collecting, analysing and presenting data in a format that can be used by others to make an informed decision. A group presentation will enable you to develop team working, presentation and digital skills whilst manipulating information to create an informed discussion. You will also appreciate the different forms of communication for example, how to distil important information on a scientific discovery into a short pamphlet or leaflet.

Learning Strategies
Subject Specific¿ -
The module will be delivered by tutor led sessions, group work throughout which the emphasis will be on student involvement.¿

The information will be delivered using lectures, videos and demonstrations. Worksheets will be used to engage students in an active role in the learning process.

Formative learning will be aided by assignments, exercises and the ability to receive formative feedback of coursework drafts prior to submission.¿

The lectures will be spread over semester 1 and 2 so that there will be class contact and scheduled activities per week.
¿
The time for independent study will be taken up by preparation and completion of assignment work, library research, preparation for class discussion.
