Module Indicative Content
The content corresponds to the competencies identified by the IBMS. This material will be delivered in the workplace by practising biomedical scientists with tutorial support delivered by the university.
The following competencies will be demonstrated to a standard appropriate to an associate practitioner (AP).
The key concepts of the biological, physical and clinical sciences relevant to a practising AP as detailed in the current IBMS competency portfolio will be covered. Broadly, these cover the healthy and diseased states - and how it is determined - in the pathologies of Biochemistry, Haematology, Immunology, Microbiology and Physiology.
You will examine how the professional principles identified by the HPC and IBMS are translated into action by considering different approaches to practice, and how to select or modify these to meet the needs of patients and colleagues.
You will understand the need to establish and maintain a safe environment and to employ good laboratory practice.
Module Additional Assessment Details

Typical examples of evidence include exercises, scenarios, audits. For all activities an evidence cover sheet is completed which is signed off by the training officer when they are satisfied that the student has demonstrated competency to the appropriate standard.
Additional Assessment Details:
Feedback will be provided by examining the portfolio at various stages of its preparation
Module Learning Strategies
Predominantly, this material will be learned in the workplace as part of the student's duties. It is expected that there will be approximately 12h of formal guidance provided by University tutors, normally be in the form of a tutorial/discussion, or occasionally in a more formal delivery style such as a lecture/powerpoint presentation. In addition approximately 12 h will be spent in the lab with relevant hospital staff.
Specify the number of independent study hours attributed to each type of activity (eg reading / assessment preparation). Total hours should equate to Independent Study Hours identified on page 1 of this form.
126h of independent time will be devoted to researching the material and compiling the portfolio.
