Indicative Content
Applied Entomology is traditionally viewed in terms of the interference of human activity by an insect pest. However, in this module we examine both beneficial and harmful effects of insect activity and the ways in which control and other strategies can be applied to manage entomological problems. Applied entomology relies on a thorough understanding of insect biology and ecology and this is where the module begins. Phytophagy and haematophagy are studied very much from the anthropological perspective, with a focus on the effects of insect activities on crops, horticulture, humans and livestock. Co-ordinated global activities of surveillance and control are examined and we will look at current concerns and insect threats both nationally and internationally. Insect pest management strategies are explored through example and the lessons learnt from history. Entomological research forms a theme throughout the module where research informed sessions focus on authentic insect problems.
Assessment Details
The module is assess by:
1. Short answer test (40%) 90 mins normally during the module
2. Exam (60%) 2 hr containing a choice of questions
The Exam is the FINAL assessment for this module.
Learning Strategies
The 33 hours of contact time (3 hours per week over 11 weeks per semester) will typically involve an introductory lecture followed by an interactive activity, such as discussions, debates, student presentations, and problem-solving activities.
Independent Study
There will be 120 hours of independent study. As a guide you should use the time as follows:
22 hours pre-lecture session preparation
22 hours preparation for workshop or interactive task
73 hours reading and revision for class test and end of module exam.
Texts
Most of the reading will be based on the primary literature and use of high quality internet resources.
