INDICATIVE CONTENT
Students will study a range of theories, case studies and techniques relevant to enterprise and business management in the land based industry (Zoological Gardens, Agriculture, Pet Retail, Domestic boarding kennels, Animal Charities, Welfare organisations, Rescue and Rehabilitation, International Organisations in the Animal Industry). It is expected that some aspects will be delivered using strategies and case studies outside the land based industry where relevant, such as large multinational companies, however these elements will always be linked back to the land based sector as the ultimate focus.
Specific elements of enterprise and business management to be covered include:
Business Strategy
The strategic management process, mission statements, business objectives, internal and external business analysis. Strategic choice and implementation, emergent and intended strategies, competitive advantage.
Strategic Marketing
Defining marketing, the importance of marketing, target markets, positioning and segmentation. Designing and using an effective marketing mix; product, price, place and promotion. Identifying and analysing markets. Brand development and equity, customer loyalty
Human Resource Management
Introduction to HRM, influences and development. HRM vs personnel management. Strategic fit, designing work, recruitment and selection, motivation theory, talent development.
Operations Management
Concept of operations management, issues affecting operations, capacity, targets and efficiency. Supply chain management, just in time and lean operations. Managing quality, quality systems and customer service.
Enterprise Planning and financial Planning
Enterprise start-up, entrepreneurial skills, resources, transformation models, business planning, finance, cost, revenue, profit, cash flow, break even analysis, assessing business start-ups.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
The assessment for this module will comprise of two aspects
The first is a 2500-word case study on HRM, operations management and quality systems (50%). LOs 2 and 3 and
The second is a 2500-word business start-up plan (50%). LOs 1 & 4
The module will also involve a range of formative assessment techniques to assess learning and progress throughout the module including practical assessments, self, peer and tutor evaluation, targeted questioning and critical analysis.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
This module will be delivered via 22 x 4 hour classroom sessions that will deliver theory via a range of methods such as traditional lectures, group activities, guest speakers, individual tasks, questioning, role play, modelling, kinaesthetic activities and short research tasks to develop underpinning knowledge and understanding, 4 x 2 hour tutorial and seminar sessions to promote and encourage discussion and debate of topical issues.
On top of this it is expected that students will partake in at least 204 hours of independent learning for this module. This will include, but is not limited to, preparation for classroom sessions (~24hrs), extending classroom and practical notes via extended reading and research (~72 hrs), completion of tasks leading from classroom sessions and VLE based tasks (~48hrs) and research, planning and production of assignments (~60 hrs)
Students will have access to an appropriate virtual learning environment (VLE) where they can access a range of sources to support their studies through this module.
