INDICATIVE CONTENT
In this module you will have the opportunity to develop, through synoptic broad ranging activities, many of the skills and attributes of the critical thinker. Beginning with an introduction to critical thinking and discipline paradigms within the Biomedical sciences, the module will consider debate, discourse and disagreement within science through real life examples. These will be examined within an ethical context, considering differing viewpoints and ethical thinking. Cutting-edge topics in Biomedical Science research, including some controversial issues will be presented in a series of 'academic perspectives' sessions delivered by tutors and guest speakers followed by structured discussion and debate. These can be online synchronous sessions or recorded lectures and asynchronous sessions and discussion. Specialist external speakers, from a range of backgrounds, will contribute to the delivery of the module through these perspective lectures. The module will include online collaborative sessions which are student led and focused, encouraging online peer support and co-production. The module may explore many aspects of the role of Biomedical Science in the global economy, in knowledge industries and specifically the importance of graduates to the growing global biomedical and bioscientific communities.
This module is mapped against the Quality Assurance Agency Benchmark for Biomedical Science and the National School of Healthcare Science Practitioner Training Programme curriculum and contributes to the Healthcare Science Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship Standard by developing your knowledge of the underlying scientific principles of the investigations offered by healthcare science services, together with demonstrating the skills and knowledge required for personal and professional development and research and innovation.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
Scientific Article (1500 words) LOs 1,2,4
Research and critically evaluate a topic at the limit of knowledge within your speciality and apply this in the production of an opinion piece for submission to a professional periodical.
Contribution to Online Discussion (4 x 200 words or equivalent) LO 3
You will show evidence of considered reflection and debate within the online discussion embedded within the module.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
This module is delivered as a blend of asynchronous online learning sessions, on campus study days and work-based study. Within each learning unit you will be given a range of learning outcomes and directed through a variety of learning material (for example recorded lectures, online exercises or collaborative activities) to work though asynchronously together with an opportunity to check and develop your learning (for example through online quizzes, challenge questions or discussion fora). You are encouraged to reflect upon the academic content of the module and consider how this is applicable within your workplace.
Your learning is supported by a group discussion board and weekly online sessions where you can discuss your learning with the academic teaching team.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Demonstrate understanding of the uncertainty, ambiguity and limits of knowledge within your award discipline and/or related areas. Knowledge and Understanding, Learning
2. Use established techniques of enquiry within your discipline to initiate and undertake critical evaluation of current research, and arrive at considered judgement on the value of this work, considering wider ethical issues and to communicate your conclusions in an appropriate way to other scientists. Analysis, Communication, Enquiry
3. Manage your own learning by taking personal responsibility and showing initiative in order to demonstrate your learning ability, personal qualities and transferable skills necessary for professional level employment, further study or training. Reflection
4. Evaluate the role of biomedical resear
ch, enquiry, endeavour and enterprise within the global context and your role as a nascent graduate healthcare (biomedical) scientist within that context. Application, Knowledge and Understanding
RESOURCES
You will require access to a computer with internet access.
Access to specialist facilities on campus.
REFERENCE TEXTS
This module examines topics at the limits of knowledge within biomedical science, and as such there are no texts for this module. You will be directed to online sources and primary literature, editorial, scientific and social commentary. You may also use governmental publications, reports and articles for different audiences.
