The Pitch Presentation
Due: Week 12
Weighting: 100%
To complete the module, in the final week, students will propose and pitch their business startup idea to a panel of entrepreneurs/potential investors and experts. Through their pitch deck, the students will concisely communicate their start-ups business description, value proposition, market opportunity, and revenue potential. The pitch will be judged by the panel in terms of creativity and viability of the venture in todays marketplace, and the winning pitch will receive a non-monetary award. Students can work individually or as a team (not more than 3 students per team) on their presentation.
The presentation is a mandatory component for the successful completion of the module and will assess all three learning outcomes listed below.

Indicative Content
Week 01: Introduction to the module and Introduction to Entrepreneurship (2-hour in-class session introducing the purpose of the module and understanding the key theories/concepts of entrepreneurship. Understanding entrepreneurial landscape in Sri Lanka and start-up eco system).
Week 02: Opportunity recognition and idea generation (2-hour guest lecture/webinar on developing an entrepreneurial mindset to recognize opportunities in the business environment).
Week 03: Business registration, business law and intellectual property in Sri Lanka (2-hour workshop by industry expert on the process of how businesses are registered and the regulatory framework applicable to business firms in Sri Lanka).
Week 04: Capital arrangement and funding sources (2-hour workshop conducted by angel investors/banks on available funding options available and managing finances in an entrepreneurial venture).
Week 05: Introduction to start-up internship programme (2-hour in-class session to introduce the start-up internship program and allocate student to real-world start-up firms to obtain first-hand business operational experience in order to bridge the gap between learning about entrepreneurship and doing it).
Week 06: Industry placement (20-hour work placement related to start-up internship program. Participant will be placed in different types of start-up organizations to obtain first-hand experiences in business operations, troubleshooting, business decisions making and opportunity recognition).
Week 07: Introduction to co-working in Sri Lanka (2-hour workshop conducted by co-working facility provider in Sri Lanka to introduce the concept and benefits of co-working).
Week 08: Introduction to start-up competitions in Sri Lanka (2-hour guest lecture on competitions available for start-ups, the application process, how to write a business plan and how to pitch business idea(s) effectively).

Week 10: Educational Tour 02 (2-hour educational tour to the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce to understand the import and export process of goods in Sri Lanka).
Week 11: Why become an entrepreneur? (2-hour knowledge and experience sharing session by a prominent and successful entrepreneur in Sri Lanka, highlighting the importance of entrepreneurship and practical strategies on overcoming challenges/barriers).
Week 12: Business pitch presentation (Students will be required to develop their pitch deck and communicate their business idea to a panel comprising a mix of entrepreneurs and academics).

Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation provides entrepreneurially-minded students with hands-on experience to bridge the gap between studying about entrepreneurship and actually experiencing it. You will be exposed to real-life entrepreneurship through the start-up internship programme and first-hand insights of entrepreneurs and industry experts. The entrepreneurial skillsets and mindsets creativity, problem-solving, identifying new business opportunities - that you will develop in this module will not just prepare you for self-employment but will also set you apart in the corporate world.
Learning Strategies
The learning strategy for full-time delivery requires students to commit to 100 learning hours (including assessment). Of this, there will be 20 hours of direct teaching and learning (comprising in-class sessions, guest lectures, workshops, and industrial visits), 40 hours of engagement in the start-up internship programme, and 40 hours of independent and self-directed study.
