INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module explores the processes necessary when adapting texts to fit new genres and formats. Throughout the module, you will study a range of adaptations in different media genres. You will be introduced to the codes and conventions of a range of media types and will need to successfully communicate the key elements of original text to a new medium. You will need to plan, research, log and produce an outcome adapting their chosen text into a new genre or medium. They will also submit a commentary in which they explore how their piece meets the conventions and codes of their chosen genre.
As part of their preparation, you will view, research and discuss a range of existing adaptations by other practitioners. After completing this module, you will have a wider sense of how different media genres work and how your own work can challenge and subvert genre constraints to meet the needs of diverse audiences.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
Assessment 1 – Planning and production log [LO 1]
You will explore a range of media texts in different genres and study how these texts have been adapted and reinterpreted in different forms. You will then need to detail their own adaptation of a text into a new genre or form. The production log will detail the practical stages necessary to successfully complete with text transformation. The production log should also include a short commentary on the adaptations to the final piece with discussion of how it meets the conventions of the new genre or format.
Assessment 2 – Final Piece [LO 2,3]
You will present their adaptation in an appropriate format to their pathway. Potential outcomes include a short film, short story, a series of newspaper or magazine articles, a script or short performance.

WEB DESCRIPTORS
In this module, you will plan and produce your own adaptation of a chosen media text. You will develop knowledge of the conventions and expectations of different genres and formats. You will engage in lectures, group discussions and seminars, developing the ability to analyse a range of media texts and their adaptations. You will learn about how and why other creative practitioners do the things they do and will understand how your own work can benefit from this knowledge.
You will study how adaptations allow conventions to be subverted to fit the needs of new and increasingly diverse audiences and media outlets. Throughout the module you will show clear knowledge of the expectations of audiences when engaging with different genres and formats, which is a necessary requirement when developing your own successful adaptation. Your finished outcome will display a creative reimagining that is justified in your planning and production log. You will communicate the choices you have made and how they are relevant to creating a successful product.
