ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
The Multichannel Audio Production will be based on a supplied production files which the student will be required to mix edit and pan into a fixed multichannel or object based immersive audio format.
The structured interview will examine the session files as well as asking specific questions about the planning and management of the session as well as the processes and techniques utilised in the production workflow.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts and techniques involved in surround sound and multichannel audio production, providing a comprehensive understanding of both the technical and creative aspects of immersive sound. Students explore the historical development of multichannel formats, from early stereo systems to modern immersive technologies like Dolby Atmos. They learn how to design and create soundscapes for applications in music, film, gaming, and virtual reality, emphasizing spatial perception and the psychological impact of sound in immersive environments.
A core component of the module focuses on practical skills in multichannel audio production, with students learning to use industry-standard Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and tools for multichannel editing, panning, and mixing. Emphasis is placed on working with multiple microphone techniques and multi-microphone setups to capture and produce high-quality surround recordings. Students will also gain hands-on experience in mixing for 5.1, developing the technical ability to balance and position sounds within complex audio spaces.
The module integrates theoretical and aesthetic considerations by examining how sound directionality, distance, and movement within the sound field can be used creatively. Students learn how to apply these principles in practical settings, designing immersive experiences that enhance narrative and emotional impact. This includes using binaural audio, Ambisonics, and object-based audio techniques to create dynamic, three-dimensional sound environments. Additionally, students gain an understanding of the role of space and room acoustics in multichannel setups, exploring how to optimize sound reproduction and ensure accuracy.
Finally, students are introduced to professional practices in the multichannel audio industry, from technical skills in signal routing and monitoring to industry standards for deliverables in film, television, music, and gaming. They learn how to manage large-scale audio projects and apply multichannel audio technologies to solve practical problems in recording and production. The module concludes with opportunities to troubleshoot technical issues, work collaboratively, and reflect on the creative process, ensuring students are equipped with the necessary skills to produce high-quality, immersive audio content across a variety of platforms.
