Module Learning Strategies
The module content may be delivered primarily via on-line distance learning content and the application of that content to your workplace.
On-line component
You will have access to Microsoft Academy E-Learning Central, where the formal learning content of the module will be found. In addition, you will use the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to provide additional information and to act as an organisational hub for your studies. You will also be encouraged to discuss relevant aspects within discussion forums that are part of the VLE. The forums will allow discussion with a student¿s peer group as well as the module tutor.
Work-based component
You are encouraged to spend time seeking re-enforcement of academic learning through practical experience in the use of Windows server operating system in the work environment. This will include investigation of how aspects of the syllabus material apply to your own workplace. You will have access to a workplace based mentor and if enough of you are enrolled from a given location, study groups will be used to provide mutual support.
2 hours of Academic Tutor contact time will be used for formative reviews. Where necessary, reviews may be conducted virtually using appropriate tools. There will be two formative reviews lasting 1 hour each. The remaining tutor contact time will be in support of distance learning activities.
Module Indicative Content
Configuring Active Directory - DNS, Infrastructure, roles and services and Certificate services. Creating and maintaining Active Directory objects and maintaining an Active Directory environment.
Configuring infrastructure addressing and services; name resolution; network access and file and print services; monitoring and managing a network infrastructure.
Planning for server deployment and management; monitoring and maintaining servers; planning application and data provisioning; planning for business continuity and high availability.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Assignment - 2400 words (40%) Learning outcome 1. This will typically involve a critical comparison between 2 different versions of Windows Server (e.g. 2008 and 2012).
Assignment - design a Windows server and network infrastructure for a specific environment - 3600 words (60%). Learning outcomes 2 and 3. Final assessment. This will typically involve design for a relevant work environment (e.g. Health Services) with a focus on virtualisation services and/or security.
Module Special Admissions Requirements
Prior knowledge of Windows based IT infrastructure consistent with MTA (Microsoft Technology Associate) IT Infrastructure Track - Fundamentals of Windows Operating Systems; Windows Server Administration Fundamentals, Networking Fundamentals; Security Fundamentals.
