Module Indicative Content
This module introduces students to commercial secure converged access solutions and shows how the nature of the underlying network can affect the design and implementation of layered converged video/voice/data architectures. It also aims to give an understanding of the principles of voice over IP technology and IP telephony.
It covers:
- Video traffic
- VOIP traffic
- Queuing techniques
- traffic shaping
- Congestion management
- Signalling and call control: H.323 and MGCP
- Voice Network management and troubleshooting
Module Additional Assessment Details
A practical test weighted at 50%, duration 2 hours, Learning outcomes (2 and 5), the test covers the design and configuration of an IP telephony network.
A written examination weighted at 50%., duration 2 hours, Learning outcomes (1, 2, 3 and 4) Final assessment.
Module Learning Strategies
26 hours lectures and 52 hours practicals. The lecture will be looking at the academic aspects of networking within a commercial organisation. The underlying theory will be given in these sessions. Lab sessions every week to gain practical IP telephony experience and re-enforce theory
