INDICATIVE CONTENT
The module looks at types of threat, securing access to devices, AAA, implementing firewall and intrusion protection technologies, layer 2 security features, cryptographic systems, VPN's and how to manage a secure network. This module will also consider Legal, social and ethical issues relating to network security.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
A written examination, length 2 hours weighted at 50% looking at learning outcomes 1 and 4.
A practical assessment (1 hour) not in exam conditions (50%) looking at learning outcomes 2 and 3(final assessment.)

NOTE
Instructors teaching this module who use the CISCO material must have completed CCNA 1, 2, 3 and 4, INS1&2, ISCW or IINS
SPECIAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
For a student to be successful within this module they would need to have the level of knowledge which would be expected of completing a CCNA based course. A student does not need to have completed a CCNA but just the equivalent level of knowledge through study at the university, other institution or industrial experience.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1) Demonstrate systematic understanding and critically evaluate security threats, the securing of network devices, AAA, VPN, IPS, firewalls and cryptographic systems. (Analysis, Communication, Knowledge and Understanding).
2) Install, configure and test firewall and intrusion prevention technologies according to industry standards using commercial equipment. (Learning, Problem Solving).
3) Implement a VPN solution with appropriate security, securing the LAN according to industry standards using commercial equipment. (Application).
4) Critically evaluate legal, social and ethical issues relating to network security. (Analysis, Enquiry, Communication).
Module Learning Strategies
13 hours lectures, 26 hours labs/tutorials.
Within this subject the lectures and tutorials will be shared with the module COCS50674 and due to this there 2 hours of additional teaching to cover level 6 topics
Self-directed learning using on-line material
Weekly one hour lectures to supplement on-line material
On-line multiple choice tests to give formative feedback
Lab sessions every week to gain practical networking experience and reinforce theory
Investigation using Web and suitable academic resources
