ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
An ASSIGNMENT weighted at 100%. (Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4.). This will be a portfolio consisting of a case study (50%) Learning outcomes 1, 2, and 4, which will look at a real world scenario and the application of practical skills to a more limited practical scenario (50%) Learning outcomes 2 and 3.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
Network Security module explores, investigates and analyses the field of network security. The module looks at various types of security threats and foundation protection, routed and switched data and management plane security controls, implementing and maintaining VPN technologies, cryptographic systems, AAA and implementing firewall and intrusion prevention technologies, Commercial risks.
Social, legal and ethical issues relevant to the network security professional.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
The material will be presented through a combination of directed self-study, recorded lectures, on-line materials in Blackboard, practical exercises that could involve use of a network simulation software or remote access to networking kit via the NetLab system, asynchronous handling of queries via email and discussion board, but also synchronous surgery sessions and skype as necessary.
On-line multiple choice tests to give formative feedback
Investigations using online resources
RESOURCES
Standard network laboratory facilities accessible remotely via NetLab system
Network simulation software such as Opnet.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of current and bleading edge technologies pertaining to security threats, routed and switched data and management plane security controls, AAA, VPN, IPS, firewalls and cryptographic systems in line with advanced professional standards. (Analysis, Knowledge and Understanding, Reflection).
2. Critically select, justify, install, configure and test the complex firewall and intrusion prevention technologies using commercial grade equipment and critically analyse/evaluate the success of proposed solutions according to advanced professional industry standards and with a critical appreciation of any commercial risks involved. (Application, Enquiry, Problem Solving).
3. Critically analyse, select and install a VPN solution with appropriate security using commercial equipment and critically evaluate the success of proposed solutions according to advanced professional industry standards and with a critical appreciation of any commercial risks involved. (Application, Enquiry, Problem Solving).
4. Discuss critically legal, social and ethical issues relating to network security. (Analysis, Communication).
