Module Additional Assessment Details
COURSEWORK weighted at 40% (Learning outcomes 1 and 2)
Individual Work
Scenario: A fictional award-related company is advertising for several apprenticeship posts. The assignment consists of preparing an application for one of the posts. The employer requires:
1. A skills audit and personal development plan
2. A CV and covering letter
3. A five-minute self-promotion presentation demonstrating suitability for the post, and how professional ethics are important to a company
4. A fully-referenced 1500 word literature review on one academic topic related to the apprenticeship
SECOND COURSEWORK weighted at 60% (Learning outcomes 1, 3, 4,5)
Scenario: The company decides to employ you but wants to see how well you can work on databases, and fulfilling part of a specification as part of a team. They provide you with a specification/scenario and request you provide the following:
Milestone 1: Individual Component
- The design of the database for the scenario in the form of an Entity Relationship Model
- A working database which corresponds to the design
- A report containing requested query statements and their output
Milestone 2: Group work
- Fulfilment of the company's specification with students taking roles in their award area (with supporting appropriate design and testing documentation)
- 10-minute group presentation of describing each role in the team, and reflecting on the team experience

Study Skills (4 weeks)
- Introduction to libraries and learning resources
- Relating study effort to learning outcomes, assessment and marking criteria
- Mind maps and other aids in planning academic study
- Report writing, evaluation and reflection.
- Communication skills and presentations
- Research skills
- Academic ethics - avoiding academic misconduct
Professional Development (3 weeks)
- Personal skills audit / Professional development planning
- Enterprise and Entrepreneurship
- Employability - e.g. CV, covering letters, ways of self-promotion
- Professional ethics - what it means to a computing professional (including Data Protection, IP, risk assessment)
Systems Analysis (3 weeks)
- Systems Analysis and Design in Context: What constitutes a system? The history of systems development, the reasons for system failure.
- Typical software development lifecycles and methodologies such as SSADM 4+, Rapid Application Development (RAD) etc.
- Overview of Agile life-cycle and techniques
Database Design (4 weeks)
- Introduction to the concept and use of Database Management systems (DBMS)
- Relational Design i.e. entity relationship models
- Normalisation
- Tables
- SQL / Simple queries, insert, update, delete using a suitable tool eg: MySQL
Team Work and Fulfilling a Specification (10 weeks) (to include further practice of DB design and creation)
- Overview of the design process and the back-end development process for web development
- Further depth in EITHER 'Graphic/ Layout Design and target audience analysis' (for web designers, design-oriented web developers) OR 'Introduction to Server side web development with PHP/MYSQL' (for Web Programmers, and Software Engineers, programming-oriented web developers).
