This module will focus on traditional methodologies such as SSADM 4+ but will examine how Agile techniques can be used to improve traditional methodologies.

This module will cover aspects of skills associated with investigation, gathering and analysis of information.

The assessment will be a case study which will result in a build of a small application.

The module will include:

Methodologies: traditional and Agile
Case studies
Report writing
Fact finding and feasibility
Time management
Business and Technical Systems Options
Context and dataflow diagrams / dataflow modelling
Entity relationship diagrams and modelling
Normalisation

Prototyping and HCI (Interface design/globalisation issues)

Conversion of the logical design into a physical system (prototype), using an application development environment suitable for a COMPUTER SCIENCE SOLUTION

Introduction to Databases:
- Introduction to the concept and use of a Database Management System
- Implementation of a prototype database management system to include queries, forms and reports to meet user requirement specification
Backup and recovery
Security
Selection of DBMS, operating system, hardware
SQL; DML; DCL; DDL

Integration of databases into standard application
Concepts and issues of distributed databases, queries with associated software issues
Module Learning Strategies
48 hours of lectures and 48 hours of practical sessions. In the practical session you will work through exercises to get hands-on experience of the principles taught in the lecture.
