Module Additional Assessment Details
A examination - unseen in examination conditions (length 2 hours) weighted at 70% (Learning outcomes 1, 2 and 4).
- The exam is intended to test your theoretical and conceptual understanding of information resource management topics.

A group coursework assignment (typically 3,000 words) weighted at 30% (Learning outcomes 3 and 4)
- The assignment will be carried out in pairs or in small groups.
- The deliverable from the assignment will be a management information report, produced in sections, each section relating to a different topic with presentations and discussion as appropriate.
- There will be a way of apportioning the marks awarded according to the performance and input of members of the group or pair.
- The strategy of the learning assignment is to test practical abilities in solving common problems in IT management.
Module Indicative Content
The module aims to identify the main areas where problems can arise in IT organisations and in the development of projects. This will cover the issues of:
- project initiation and financial justification
- the impact of rapid technological developments
- project management issues over the development lifecycle and management issues in the implementation and maintenance of IT projects
- operational management of IT in organisations including the problems of security, service level agreements, specifications
- procurement, contracts and negotiation strategies
- managing IT in a global environment
- outsourcing, impact of offshore and business processes
- ethical and social issues, which impact on the organisation
- issues in relation to aligning IT within the organisation
- budgetary issues - quantifying benefits, identifying costs,
- using information economics to capture strategic benefits and business imperatives.
Module Learning Strategies
'Keynote' lectures to indicate the core material and to introduce topics for independent study;
Workshop/tutorials to illustrate the main points by applying techniques to and observing practice in case studies;
Seminars to expand on the topics and discuss the solutions as appropriate;
The assignment will be integrated into the Independent Study component.
The typical pattern of delivery will be 12 lectures (1:n) and 12 tutorials/workshops (1:20) and 12 seminars (1:n).
