Module Indicative Content
The module provides an in depth understanding of Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) and Re-Design within organisations. It also explores and evaluates the role that Information Systems and Information Technology (IS/IT) has within BPR Projects and appraises available IT tools and implementation approaches to support projects by:
Principles and dimensions of Business Processes Re-Engineering, Functions and Processes. Value Chain analysis, scale and scope of processes and value engineering applied to processes. Levels of processes
Process re-design and process improvement. Improvement expectations Re-design versus re-engineering. Project organisation and structure. Realising the benefits. Continuous and rapid improvement projects. Benchmarking
Process modelling tools and techniques: Choosing and using a process mapping tool (UML and other open source tools). Analysis tools and techniques (e.g. activity based costing, cycle time analysis, root cause analysis, Pareto analysis, Ishikawa analysis) and their application.
Processing modelling tools: design and implementation.
The role of information technology: IS/IT role in business re-engineering.
Exploiting IS/IT in the re-engineering project. Re-engineering IS/IT.
Managing re-engineering projects: Organisational culture; teams and functions; Empowerment and BPR team structures; Core group roles, project team operational techniques and evolution.

Module Learning Strategies
On-line materials will exemplify topical issues and best practice case studies.
The practical nature of the module is emphasised by the provision of practical portfolio tasks and an assignment which reflects all the elements of the module.
Appropriate software applications for supporting business process modelling will be used.
On-line, telephone and email support will be provided as necessary.

Module Additional Assessment Details
100% in course assessment.
Assignment weighted at 70%. (Learning outcomes 2 and 3). In course assessment, 3000 words written process modelling document for a business process re-engineering scenario.
A portfolio weighted at 30% (learning outcomes 1 and 4). A variety of tasks will be undertaken which can be built up into an on-line portfolio. Short tests administered through Blackboard will be used where appropriate.
