Module Details
Module Special Admissions Requirements
For students on the Masters by Research (MRes) in Computing Science (distance learning) this is the second module in the programme of study, the prior module being:
COIS71196 Applied Research Methods (Distance Learning) or similar
It may also be taken as a module by research students on other research awards (e.g. PgCRM) by negotiation.

Module Indicative Content
This module builds on the research skills gained on the Applied Research Methods (DL) module. You will produce an individual programme of research study in a selected domain, defined by a Learning Contract, under the guidance of a supervisor. Then you will produce an assessed research paper of up to 6,000 words based on secondary research into relevant material selected from the broader body of knowledge in your chosen domain.
Module Resources
You will need access to these resources:
- Blackboard virtual learning environment;
- Access to Library Information Services eResources via Athens;
- Access to external library catalogues and websites;
- Academic search engine (e.g. Google Scholar);
- Skype or teleconferencing and video or podcast technology.
Module Additional Assessment Details
100% Coursework, consisting of 3 items:
A LEARNING CONTRACT weighted at 20%
A RESEARCH PAPER weighted at 70%
A PRESENTATION weighted at 10%
LEARNING CONTRACT - the basis of an agreed research programme in consultation with an appropriate supervisor. (Learning Outcome 1)
PAPER - research paper of up to 6,000 words in the chosen area as defined by the Learning Contract. (Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 4, 5)
PRESENTATION - A presentation of approximately 20 minutes accompanied by questions and answers (Learning Outcome 5).
You must write the paper focused on secondary research (i.e. a literature review) showing an understanding of the literature relating to the subject and its relevance to your specialist research area. The theoretical work that underpins your research area (as defined in the Learning Contract) should be identified and discussed critically. You should be aware of the ethical issues that may apply to research projects in general and must behave ethically by following relevant guidelines in carrying out your secondary research in line with the University¿s policy. The emphasis is on developing your knowledge of the chosen research domain.
Module Learning Strategies
These learning strategies will occupy your time:
- There will be a heavy emphasis on independent learning as a facilitator of research, using appropriate technologies. The classes will be virtual;
- The learning materials on the VLE will include indicative subject `keynotes¿ (including live and recorded lectures), guided reading and examples of research resources;
- The role of the tutor will be as a facilitator and advisor. The student is expected to manage his or her own research. The 10 hours contact time will usually be in the form of teleconferenced or telephoned meetings between the tutor and student, although face-to-face meetings may also be used when appropriate;
- The VLE will provide interaction between the tutor and student(s) and between students within a group through interactive forums.
Students will be encouraged to use this media where appropriate to develop discursive skills.
- The submission of the Learning Contract and Reports should be done through the VLE.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
1) NEGOTIATE AND PRODUCE A LEARNING CONTRACT DEFINING THE RESEARCH AREA AND INDICATING THE DELIVERABLES, MILESTONES AND LEARNING OUTCOMES THAT APPLY TO A RESEARCH PROJECT. [Communication; Knowledge & Understanding; Reflection]

2) IDENTIFY, EXPLORE, AND EXTRACT RESEARCH MATERIAL FROM THE LITERATURE RELATING TO A CHOSEN RESEARCH SUBJECT, USING APPROPRIATE METHODS.
[Analysis; Enquiry; Reflection]

3) ANALYSE MATERIAL DERIVED FROM THE LITERATURE IN A SYSTEMATIC, CRITICAL AND REFLECTIVE WAY, FORMING INFERENCES AND DRAWING CONCLUSIONS.
[Enquiry; Reflection]

4) SHOW AN AWARENESS OF THE ETHICAL ISSUES IN SECONDARY RESEARCH BOTH IN TERMS OF DATA EXTRACTION AND THE UTILISATION OF SUCH DATA.
[Application; Enquiry; Reflection]

5) PRODUCE A FORMAL RESEARCH REPORT DEFINING RESEARCH DOMAINS, EXPLAINING AND NARRATING THE METHODOLOGY EMPLOYED AND PRESENTING AND EVALUATING THE RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS CRITICALLY IN WRITTEN AND VERBAL FORM.
[Communication; Knowledge & Understanding; Learning]
