INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module has two main aims, clearly linked to the learning outcomes: (1) to improve your academic listening and speaking skills and (2) to improve your skills in reading academic texts and producing academic writing skills.
The module will cover listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, including note taking, question and answer, taking part in group discussions, reading of texts and production of written material.
The module content will include general language skills and academic vocabulary and skills.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
This is a zero CATs rated module but students are required to demonstrate engagement and commitment to their studies. Students will therefore be required to take part in a number of learning tasks and to document their progress in an individual learning record.
The learning tasks include:
• Attendance at and participation in group discussions
• Summarising and explaining written and oral material
• The presentation and submission of an academic report on a topic relevant to your chosen award
You will be required to demonstrate engagement with the module and may be withdrawn if you do not meet the engagement requirements. Engagement will be demonstrated through attendance, contributions to the taught sessions and the satisfactory completion of the individual learning record and the learning tasks.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
The learning strategies reflect the learning outcomes and the tasks that you will complete. A variety of delivery methods will be used which may include formal lectures or group work or workshops. Contact time will be 3 hours per week for 12 weeks. It is expected that you will study in your own time and complete at least 114 hours of independent study.
You will participate in seminars and group discussions and will be invited to attend university activities such as attendance at guest lectures and British Computer Society events. These activities will help you to improve your understanding communication in academic situations.

The texts used will vary depending on your award. Your tutors will be able to recommend suitable texts.

SPECIAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
Students accepted on to this module will be required to have IELTS L6 or equivalent.
