100% in course assessment.
Assignment weighted at 70%. (Learning outcomes 1, 2 and 4). In course assessment, 3000 words written design proposal for a IT systems scenario.
A portfolio weighted at 30% (learning outcomes 3, 4). A variety of tasks will be undertaken which can be built up into an on-line portfolio. Short tests administered through Blackboard will be used where appropriate.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
It is generally accepted that individuals working in organisations in the twenty-first century will have a greater need than ever for effective management skills. Businesses will need to be able to innovate quickly enough to achieve market leadership, to make the best use of diverse viewpoints to achieve optimal results and promote world class quality and will need to acquire the skills of effective implementation of policies and plans. The pervasive use of IT in the context of managing a business is well documented as a driver to the success of a business.
This module will introduce students to management theories and applications through the framework considered the most effective, which is based on the management functions of planning, organising, leading, and controlling and will consist of:
- Introduction to the course, the challenge of management, pioneering ideas in management.
- Understanding competitive environments and organisational cultures, social responsibility and ethics in management.
- Evaluating legal, professional and ethical issues
- Managerial decision-making, establishing organisational goals and plans.
- Strategic Management.
- Basic elements of organisation structure, strategic organisation design.
- Change management and innovation, motivation and leadership.
- Managing groups and teamwork.
- Controlling the organisation, managerial control methods.

On-line materials will exemplify topical issues and best practice case studies.
The practical nature of the module is emphasised by the provision of practical portfolio tasks and an assignment which reflects all the elements of the module.
Using the capabilities of a browser on the Internet, you will learn how to manage business with IT. Appropriate software applications for supporting businesses will be used.
On-line, telephone and email support will be provided as necessary.
