Module Details
Module Indicative Content
The module will include:
- exploring the different types of group that a worker in a youth or community work context may work with including both formal and informal groups and the value of working with groups and informal learning;
- an introduction to aspects of group work theory including models for assessing the stages of a group and their development and the models relating to the roles that people take in groups, leadership styles and their appropriate use and the skills needed to work effectively with a group;
- power in groups and the promotion of equality and anti-oppressive practice;
- creating an environment that enables effective group work.
Module Learning Strategies
This module incorporates three inter-related learning strategies. These are:

1. Tutor led sessions which will give students an overview of the requirements of the module and the key theories and concepts relating to working with groups in a youth and community work context (20 hours). Teaching methods used will include lectures, group work, experiential learning and class discussions.

2. The module will also require students to apply their learning in practice through undertaking 30 hours of placement which will include working with a group of people.

3. The independent study hours will allow for reading and research in relation to the module as well as reflection on their group work. (100 hours)

Module Additional Assessment Details
A REFLECTIVE ASSIGNMENT length 500 WORDS weighted at 30%
(This will assess learning outcome 3)

A PORTFOLIO length 1500 WORDS weighted at 70%.
Students will be required to plan, carry out and evaluate a project, event or learning activity with a group of young people (11-25) who they have been working with and then write a report on this The portfolio will also need to provide evidence that the minimum number of placement hours (30) have been completed in order to pass. (This will assess learning outcome 1,2,4 and 5)
