Module Learning Strategies
This module incorporates a number of inter-related learning strategies. The main focus of learning will be on self instruction, within a tightly structured framework and relying largely (but not exclusively) on materials supplied. Week by week you will work through self-instructional course material (delivered via Blackboard), which provides the framework and focus for reading key texts. Watching videos and undertaking the specific tasks set. This work will be undertaken on an individual basis, but at various points you will be expected to interact and share material with other students in your learning group and your tutor (24 hours). Interaction will include uploading filmed footage of your practice for peer and tutor review. The Blackboard sessions will be used for the consideration of core issues and themes relating to the theory and practice of community management and leadership. The independent study will require reading around selected topics, the development of individual responses to the reading and the preparation for the assessments. The module will run over 16 weeks including 4 weeks to complete assessments.
Module Indicative Content
This module will enable students to consider and develop their management and leadership styles in relation to working with communities. Communication and relationship building is key to effective community work, therefore students will develop listening skills, question techniques, goal setting skills and change tools on the module in order to cultivate a coaching style that embraces the values of community practice inclusive of empowerment. Students will look at the theory and practice of partnership working, emotionally intelligent leadership, coaching, facilitation and participatory approaches to working with individuals and communities. The developmental phases of working with individuals, groups and projects will be discussed along with the relevant leadership interventions that can be employed at each stage. The culture of organisations, partnership working and community practice will be considered in relation to leadership, change management, learning and development. By the end of the module students will have gained a greater understanding of leadership styles and interventions that facilitate the empowerment of staff, partners and community members with whom they work.
