Module Learning Strategies
This module incorporates a number of inter-related learning strategies. The main focus of learning will be on self instruction, within a tightly structured framework and relying largely (but not exclusively) on materials supplied. Week by week you will work through self-instructional course material (delivered via Blackboard), which provides the framework and focus for reading key texts and papers and undertaking the specific tasks set. This work will be undertaken on an individual basis, but at various points you will be expected to interact and share material with other students in your learning group and your tutor. (24 hours) The Blackboard sessions will be used for the consideration of core issues and themes relating to the theory, politics and policies of contemporary community empowerment. The independent study will require reading around selected topics, the development of individual responses to the reading and the preparation for the assessments. The module will run over 16 weeks including 4 weeks to complete assessments.
Module Indicative Content
This module gives a contextual overview of community and participatory arts work from a local, national and international perspective through the exploration of a range of concepts, case studies and practical experiences.

It aims to give a critical overview of the development of a theoretical and methodological framework for Community and Participatory Arts while giving practical experience of participative arts techniques both through communication with people working in the field, examining case studies, and though problem solving activities.

The module includes:
A critical analysis of the history and concept of community and participatory arts from a local, national and international perspective
An examination of the interrelationship of community, artist and issues through the exploration of case studies, analysis of creative materials and through engagement with practitioners working in the field
An exploration of the relationship between art, activism and social activism (including collective cultural action)
A critical reflection on how artists and communities have used it as a means of seeking political and cultural self-determination in a range of settings.
A critical assessment of the impact and legacy of community and participatory arts as a universal tool for community development.
