This module incorporates a number of inter-related learning strategies. These include:

1. Workshops that will include: (20 hours)
a. Tutor led sessions which will give students an overview of the requirements of the module and the key theories and concepts relating to managing in a youth and community work context.
b. Student led presentations relating to issues associated with managing in a youth and community work context.
c. Workshops related to management issues presented for discussion by students. The aim of the workshops will be to share experiences and identifying solutions to problems and learning.

2. The independent study hours will allow for reading and research in relation to the module as well as reflection on their management. (130 hours)

The content of this module will include managing yourself, managing the work, managing people, managing teams and managing external relationships. The module will also include issues relating specifically to management in a youth and community work context and managing change.

More specifically the module will include exploring the management issues facing Youth and Community Work and wider services for young, including the current political, social and economic environment in which managers operate. The module will include self management, management styles, emotionally intelligent leadership, managing in a changing environment, and motivational theory. It will also include consideration and analysis of a range of tools that can be used to aid the development, planning, delivery and evaluation of the work.

It will include the key functions of leadership, the strategies for managing relationships with people, including the development of individuals, the management of teams, managing external relationships and working in partnership.

1. An individual Presentation
This will be on an aspect of management from the students own management experience that will enable the group to discuss the issue raised and identify learning.[1000 words, 30%, Assessing Learning Outcomes 1,2 and 5]

2. An Essay
Critically assess the current management issues facing youth and community workers. This should be related to both theories of management and your management role [3000 words, 70%. Assessing Learning Outcomes 1 and 2]
