Module Details
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
1. Students will undertake a verbal critical discussion in which they will show their knowledge and understanding of crime prevention theories, analyse these theories and apply them to a problem-based scenario (LOs 1-3)
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module provides an in-depth exploration of crime prevention theory and practice within contemporary criminal justice contexts. Students will examine major theories of crime causation and prevention, including situational and social approaches, and critically analyse how these inform real-world strategies. The module introduces key concepts such as environmental design, community-based initiatives, and multi-agency partnerships, alongside evaluation methods for crime prevention programs.

Learners will also engage with problem-based scenarios to apply theoretical frameworks to practical challenges, developing skills in evidence-based decision-making and strategy formulation. By combining theoretical knowledge with applied learning, this module prepares students to understand and implement effective crime prevention measures. Problems will be reflective of real-world situations and where possible, informed and scenarios co-created with professionals working within the field to support skills and knowledge development for transition into employment.
LEARNING OUTCOMES

University Learning Outcome: Knowledge and understanding; Learning

2. Analyse concepts and practice in crime prevention

University Learning Outcome: Analysis

LEARNING STRATEGIES
This module will used a mixture of lectures and tutorials/seminar to support student learning. The lectures will introduce students to key crime prevention topics, whilst tutorials/seminars will provide an opportunity for discussion, application of learning and collaborative tasks. Students will be further supported in these sessions as to how to answer problem-based scenario questions and critically appraise theories.

Students will also be expected to independently study, which will involve a mixture of directed and independent learning.
