ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
1. Students will undertake a role play based on an industry devised problem requiring the demonstration of communication skills and the application of offender management techniques. Assessing learning outcomes 2 and 3.
2. Students will write a report based on the role play scenario to communicate actions taken and justify decision making. They will draw on the structures of the MoJ and HMPPS and offender management techniques, processes and practises used within the sector. Assessing learning outcomes 1 and 4.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
The module¿facilitates¿learners to study¿the functions of the Ministry of Justice, and Her Majesty’s Prison & Probation Service (HMPPS),¿the¿OMiC¿model, Contracted Prisons and Young Offenders Institutions (YOIs), Secure Training Centres, Secure Children Homes and Youth Offending Teams¿and prisoner escort services.¿The module follows¿the¿offender’s progress¿through the¿Offender Management in¿Custody¿(OMiC) process.
Issues covered include:¿Delivering the sentences and orders of the court; Establishing positive, safe,¿secure¿and decent environments for managing offenders and delivering offender services reducing reoffending and protecting the public; Theories around control and restraint; Categorisation; Deaths and the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman; Women’s Prisons; Prison reform; Close Supervision Centres; and Escort Service.¿This module will support students’ employment prospects through providing direct insight into the operations, structures and responsibilities of key criminal justice agencies; the sector knowledge alongside the practical awareness will assist students on entering the prison, probation and youth justice sector.

LEARNING STRATEGIES
This module will used a mixture of lectures and tutorials/seminar to support student learning. The lectures will introduce students to key crime prevention topics, whilst tutorials/seminars will provide an opportunity for discussion, application of learning and collaborative tasks. Students will be further supported in these sessions to ensure they are prepared for the assessments. The module will also include practical and scenario based learning.
Students will also be expected to independently study, which will involve a mixture of directed and independent learning.
