Module Details
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module explores punishment and rehabilitation in theory and practice, with a focus on sentence management, supervision, and rehabilitative decision-making within contemporary criminal justice settings. Students will examine how criminal justice professionals balance public protection, proportionality, and rehabilitation, and will develop applied skills in professional judgement through case-based and simulated learning activities.

Topics include:

- Theories and purposes of punishment
- Rehabilitation and desistance
- Sentencing and penal policy
- Custody, community punishment, and supervision
- Probation and offender management
- Risk assessment and risk management
- Compliance, breach, and recall
- Inequality, power, and penal outcomes
- Ethics, legitimacy, and professional judgement
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
1) Students will participate in a role-based simulation in which they assume the role of a sentence and rehabilitation manager responding to a structured offender case scenario. The simulation will require students to engage with issues of risk, compliance, rehabilitation, and professional decision-making within a criminal justice context.

2) Following the simulation, students will submit a reflective and analytical commentary linking their decisions and actions to relevant theories of punishment and rehabilitation, policy frameworks, and offender management principles. The assessment focuses on the application of knowledge, critical reflection, and professional reasoning rather than performance acting skills.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Teaching will be delivered through lectures, interactive workshops, and case-based learning. Simulation-based activities will be used to support applied learning and prepare students for the assessment. Formative tasks will encourage reflection, discussion, and development of professional judgement in sentence management contexts.

Ahead of the summative assessment, and as part of the module, you will have the opportunity to watch a demonstration role play of good practice, with explanations for the behaviours and decision making demonstrated and also take part in similar simulation activities to the assessment, which will include a reflective debrief and feedback which you can feed-forward for your assessment. You may also submit an extract from your report for feedback ahead of the deadline.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Explain and critically evaluate key theories and rationales of punishment and rehabilitation.

Knowledge & Understanding

2. Analyse the operation of punishment and teams involved within custodial and community justice settings, including the role of sentence management and rehabilitation.

Critical Reasoning & Collaboration

3. Apply theoretical and policy knowledge to a simulated offender management scenario, demonstrating professional judgement and reflective reasoning.

Application & Problem Solving

4. Critically reflect on professional decisions and performance using relevant theory, policy, and evidence, identifying strengths, limitations, ethical responsibilities, and areas for your own professional development.

Reflection; Personal Development & Entrepreneurship

WEB DESCRIPTOR
How do we balance punishment, rehabilitation, and public protection in a fair and ethical way?

This module takes you inside the heart of sentencing and penal policy, exploring the theories and purposes of punishment alongside the realities of rehabilitation and desistance. You’ll examine how criminal justice professionals make complex decisions about custody, community punishment, and supervision—while managing risk, compliance, and recall.

Through case-based learning and interactive simulations, you’ll grapple with real-world challenges such as inequality, ethics, and legitimacy in penal outcomes. You’ll also develop applied skills in professional judgement, risk assessment, and offender management, preparing you to navigate the tensions between public safety, proportionality, and the goal of rehabilitation in contemporary criminal justice settings.
