Module Learning Strategies
The focus will be on participants identifying, describing and analysing their own experience. A theoretical perspective will be introduced through lectures and guided reading, followed by discussion and application of recommended strategies. Video recorded material will be analysed. For independent study, participants with the support of school-based mentors, will observe practice and focus on specific activities in their workplace. They will document this to share in group sessions and to help them to prepare for their assessment tasks. Finally, students will be expected to spend 15 hours using the course VLE for support. Study for this module will take place over approximately 14 weeks, with 30 hours contact time.
Module Indicative Content
This module is intended to help you to recognise signs in individuals and small groups likely to lead to disruption and/or unacceptable behaviour, to identify conditions conducive to effective learning and to be able to understand and use appropriate behaviour management strategies in order for the above to happen.
You will explore, in relation to your experiences in the workplace, the causal pathology of the behaviour of a child when entering school; creating a climate conducive to learning; helping children or young people to see the benefits and rewards of productive learning; how to enhance self-esteem and create a sense of responsibility in the pupils/young people for their actions/behaviours; and understanding, using and assessing behaviour management strategies.
Throughout each of the five units, suggestions will be made on strategies which could be employed to overcome these difficulties. We will also look at the differences between disruptive behaviour and behaviour disorders and how to recognise the difference between the two.
