Module Indicative Content
The module will begin with the study of examples contributed by participants of incidents from their own experience in which the behaviour of children and young people has created environments that have led to productive and unproductive learning. This will lead on to the study of behaviour and strategies for creating a climate for learning.
Topics studied will include:
1. how behaviour is learned;
2. creating a climate conducive to learning;
3. helping children and young people to see the rewards of productive learning;
4. fostering self-esteem and responsibility;
5. managing effective group and individual learning;
6. understanding, using and assessing behaviour management strategies.
Examples of work-based tasks may include:
- enquiries into how role models influence the behaviour of children and young people
- observations of confrontations or incidents leading to breakdowns in communication
- identifying positive climates for effective learning
At the end of the module, time will be allocated to supporting participants in preparing a section to add to Part 3 of their Personal Professional Development Portfolio, reflecting upon and reviewing how their work for this module has enabled them to develop knowledge, understanding and skills as identified in their individual action plans. This reflective review may lead to changes or additions to the action plan.

Module Learning Strategies
The focus will be on participants identifying, describing and analysing their own experience. A theoretical perspective will be introduced through lectures and guided reading, followed by discussion and application of recommended strategies video recorded material will be analysed. For independent study, participants, with the support of school-based mentors, will observe practice and focus on specific activities in their workplace. They will document this, to share in group sessions and to help them to prepare for their assessment tasks.
