Module Texts
The module tutors will provide a comprehensive module handbook and course pack containing most of the materials needed for this module. A good English learners dictionary and English grammar book is advised.

Module Learning Strategies
1. Small groups of around 16 students
2. Sessions with practical activities, pair work, group work, presentations
3. Emphasis on active participation rather than passive observation
4. Extensive directed work using library, internet and journal/newspaper resources.
24 x 2-hour workshop sessions.
Module Indicative Content
Topic-based study of subjects of a general technical and computing nature. This module is designed to improve listening, reading, speaking and writing skills. In all areas there is consideration of grammar and vocabulary.
1. Listening skills
Grasp much of the content of general technological and professional discourse
2. Speaking skills
Give a clear presentation in your own subject area
3. Reading skills
Scan articles, textbooks, etc. in own or related areas of study to form judgements about their relevance and usefulness at moderate speed
Extract relevant information and grasp main topics of texts
4. Writing skills
Select most salient and relevant ideas from your subject field and its literature and represent them clearly and briefly in a writing.

100% In course Assessment (ICA)
1. Listening test on technical and professional themes similar to those covered in class (30 mins) ¿ 20%, LO1
2. An in-class writing test (1 hour) including reading comprehension and the writing of an essay or document synthesis ¿ 30%, LO1
3. Individual presentation on the individual's experience of the process of research - 5 minutes (max) for each person as part of a group presentation (typically 3 people in a group) on a technical/professional topic ¿ 20%, LO1, 2 & 3
4. An in-class writing test (1 hour) in which students write up a report based on research ¿ 30%, LO1, 2, & 3
