Module Details
INDICATIVE CONTENT
The module will include study of the following topics, which will include generic considerations of theory and application to the specific work contexts in which participants are involved:
This will include:
Historical perspectives of education in the UK.
Consideration of issues including the purpose of education, inclusion and social mobility.
Key reports, policies and legislation shaping education in England
Key drivers influencing education policy and practice

The purpose of this module is to provide you with historical and current perspectives on how, and why education policy and provision has changed over time with an overview from 1944 onwards. You will use and apply this critical understanding to a chosen aspect of educational policy, including a critical evaluation of your current educational setting’s provision and practice. Throughout the module you will develop an understanding of the key legislation shaping post compulsory education in England and be able to identify issues likely to impact on educational provision in the future. This will be outlined in terms of governmental change, economic pressures and changes within society.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
An overview of the historical development of education in England over a specified range of time, focusing on a contemporary issue in education reflecting on the impact of policy, legislation research and government initiatives on provision and practice using an evaluative reflection of current provision, within the practitioner’s educational setting, as an illustrative example (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4)
LEARNING STRATEGIES
A distanced learning approach will provide virtual learning with some face to face opportunities, if appropriate. University online sessions will provide you with a broad theoretical overview and the conceptual frameworks which underpin the study of changes and developments in education. Incorporated into lecture sessions, tutorial support activities will provide you with the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills to apply the underpinning theories to an examination of their own practice, in preparation for the assignment. Worked examples of taking a theme within education and recognising how legislation and or key research and reports have informed and influenced policy, provision and practice will help you to evaluate the impact of legislation etc on other aspects of post compulsory education.

This module will also provide opportunities for you to,
- work with others
- develop interpersonal skills
- demonstrate the capacity to plan, share goals, and work as a member of a team
- develop skills that enable you to transfer knowledge and understanding from one context to another

Independent study will require you to read and think about a range of contemporary issues in education and how they relate to their own employment context. This will form the basis of the assignment. In addition, you will engage in:-
Work Related Learning - You will be encouraged to relate your background reading and study for this module to workplace provision, policy and practice. This will provide you with the opportunity to link theoretical perspectives to practice. It will also enable you to reflect on values and principles, in addition to provision, policy and practices within the workplace.
Guided reading and supported self-study - you will be provided with booklists and reading tasks in order to enable them to engage with relevant and appropriate debates.
VLE - Blackboard and Teams will be used to facilitate exchange of ideas and access to specific resources and activities.

Formative assessment/feedback on groupwork and drafts of module assessments is a vital part of this module and provides you with opportunities to reflect on how well you are engaging with your studies and with sharing your thinking and reasoning with fellow students. Tutorials provide further opportunities for ongoing formative assessment and feedback on your progress and development.

This module covers a wide range of texts and you may find that you only need to read short sections of the texts listed (or from other texts that you may find in libraries or journals). Your tutor will also advise you on the relevant texts and sections of texts to read. Remember that it is important to show you have considered views from a wide range of sources. When referring to texts in your assignment, always use https://libguides.staffs.ac.uk/refzone for guidance. There are many versions of Harvard referencing systems in use around the world, but for Staffordshire University, Refzone Harvard system is the only correct method to use.
