WMC workshops will draw upon your school experience and help you to interpret that experience in the light of current thinking on teaching, learning, assessment and schooling. Some sessions will introduce you to themes through case studies. At other times you will be asked to focus on evidence you collect through your school experience. You will also be asked to use the ideas explored in the sessions in planning your future work. You will also be asked to collaborate with others in preparing and presenting your views on key issues.

There will be a complementary series of workshops in your school or college. In these workshops, senior colleagues will introduce you to the way in which issues impact on their institution and you will have the opportunity to develop your understanding through dialogue with experienced and trainee teachers.

A further 240 hours of independent study will require you to take responsibility for relating the issues addressed in this module to your personal experience and building up evidence in your portfolio. Your mentor and WMC Course Tutor will support you in this process.

Process skills for training to be a teacher
Observing lessons; identifying the context of learning; setting aims, objectives, learning outcomes; questioning; choosing learning activities; evaluating lessons

Thinking about learning
Types of learning; short and long-term memory; self-esteem; attention; motivation; Styles of learning; language and numeracy skills; individual differences and special needs.

Aspects of lesson planning
Sequencing activities; individual, small group and whole class teaching; styles of learning; classroom discipline plans; differentiation; assessment of students' work; handling values

The curriculum
National Curriculum; GCSE and GNVQ; GCE & AVCE; 16-19 curriculum; liberal education vs. vocational training; The place of Business Education in the Curriculum; ICT as a subject or cross-curricular theme; citizenship and PSE

Education in society
Role of education in society; impact of schools on cultural diversity; race, gender and class; home and school - co-operation and conflict; school choice and competition.

The school environment
Structure, organisation and management of the secondary school; legal framework of the school; delivering the National Curriculum; international comparisons; meeting diverse needs; multi-cultural education; cross curricular issues; management and control of classes; pastoral care; equal opportunities; personal and social education; links with the community; teaching as a career, job applications and interviews, pay and conditions of service.

Learning outcomes will be assessed through your portfolio of evidence and by a 2000 word assignment based on a current educational issue. Assesses learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4.
