Assessment Details
1. Reading & Writing assessment 25% (350 words)
2. Group Discussion 25% (20 minutes)
3. Minutes of a meeting 25% (400-500 words)
4 Presentation 25% (6-8 minutes)

In-class reading and writing test (60 minutes, 25%, learning outcome 1 & 2)
Students will be provided with written text on a topic which will have been discussed during the module. You will be required to summarise the main information from the text (100 words) and then give your own opinion in the form of a short essay (250 words).

Group discussion (25%, learning outcomes 1 & 2)
You will be assessed on your communicative performance during a twenty minute discussion on a given topic.

Minutes of meetings (25%, learning outcome 2)
This will consist of minutes taken from simulated professional meetings in class.

Individual presentation (approximately 6-8 minutes, 25%, learning outcome 3)
The presentation will be on a technical/professional topic similar to those covered in class. It will typically last for between 6-8 minutes.
Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to improve your academic and professional communication skills through topic-based study of subjects of both a general and subject specific nature. This module is designed to improve listening, reading, speaking and writing skills. In all areas there is consideration of grammar and vocabulary.

1. Listening skills
Grasp much of the content of general technological and professional discourse

2. Speaking skills
Give a clear presentation in your own subject area and express your opinions with accuracy and complexity when participating in group meetings

3. Reading skills
Scan articles, websites, textbooks, etc. in own or related areas of study to form judgements about their relevance and usefulness at moderate speed
Extract relevant information and grasp main topics of texts

4. Writing skills
Select most salient and relevant ideas from your subject field and its literature and represent them clearly and concisely in writing.
Learning Strategies
1.Groups of 15- 20 students
2. Sessions with practical activities, pair work, group work, presentations
3. Emphasis on active participation rather than passive observation
4. Extensive directed work using library, internet and journal/newspaper resources.
