Telecommunication Systems
Telecommunications types, features of International Telecommunications, network structure components, switching and transmission, station sets, Centrex, private branch exchange (PBX), key and hybrid systems, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) types, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), Consumer Premises Equipment (CPE) building blocks and components, telecommunications services, the process of making calls, basic services, Lines and Trunks, dedicated services, VPNs, Switched 56 and ISDN

Analogue versus Digital Transmission
Features of analogue voice signals, analogue transmission impairments, analogue multiplexing, analogue frequency division multiplexing (FDM), digital signals, digital bits and bytes, advantages of using digital technology, digital transmission, Pulse Code Modulation (PCM), characteristics of digital transmission facilities, digital time division multiplexing (TDM), digital standards, optical transmission technology, digital loop carriers (DLCs)
Module Additional Assessment Details
A COURSEWORK weighted at 50%. An EXAM length 2 HOURS weighted at 50%.

1 x 2 hour exam (50%) which will assess Learning Outcomes 1 and 2.
A formal written report (approx 1750 words) on laboratory based work (50%) which will assess Learning Outcomes 3 and 4.
Module Learning Strategies
There will be 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of particles

Learning on all aspects of the content will be facilitated by lectures and tutorials, problem solving exercises and student centred learning.
Practical assignments using laboratory equipment, communication tutor units and electronic Workbench, PSPICE/MATLAB simulation packages will support the learning
