Module Additional Assessment Details
Coursework (50%) comprising three Laboratory experiments, equally weighted- which will assess learning outcomes 1 and 3.
One, two hour exam (50%) which will assess learning outcome 1 and 2.
Module Indicative Content
1. Single-phase transformers: Core losses, equivalent circuit, equivalent circuit referred to primary side, equivalent circuit referred to secondary side, efficiency and voltage regulation, open circuit and short circuit tests.
2. DC machines: Introduction to shunt, series and separately excited machines, derivation of e.m.f. and torque equations, power stages, DC motor starter, speed and load characteristics, armature reaction, basic speed control of motors.
3. Synchronous machines: Introduction to 3-phase synchronous generator and motor, torque produced by the motor, methods of starting a 3-phase motor, effect of varying excitation of motors, equivalent circuit and phasor diagram of generator, determination of synchronous impedance of generator (open circuit and short circuit tests).
4. Induction machines: Introduction to 3-phase induction machines, synchronous speed, slip and frequency of rotor current, equivalent circuit of induction motor (as generalised transformer), power flow diagram, derivation of torque equation for motor, maximum torque and starting torque, torque/slip characteristics.

Learning Strategies
Classroom lectures and tutorials (27 hours) will form the main teaching activity. Laboratory sessions (9 hours) will be used as learning exercises with marks awarded for each laboratory as a continuous assessment mark.
This module may be delivered full-time on a block delivery basis at West Cheshire College.
