Module Details
Module Learning Strategies
Classroom lectures and tutorials (27 hours) will form the main teaching activity. Simulations sessions (9 hours) will be used as learning exercises leading onto two extended assignments. Visit to a substation.

This module may be delivered full-time on a block delivery basis by West Cheshire College.

Module Indicative Content
1. Advanced Concepts. Structure of the power system, representation of simple power networks, power and frequency control, steady state solution of simple networks, voltage and reactive power, frequency and active power, simulation tools.

2. Fault Analysis. P.U. System, single line diagrams, types of faults. Three phase short-circuit faults and the concepts of fault level, basic equations, short-circuit fault calculations. Limitation of fault currents, use of software to perform fault calculations.

3. Substations and Protection. Switchgear, qualities required of protection, components of protective schemes, protection systems, overcurrent, distance and unit protections schemes, numerical relays.

4. Power Quality. Non linear loads, power electronics in power systems, waveform distortion, voltage sag and swell. Security of supply.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Coursework (50%) comprising two assignments which assess learning outcomes 2 and 5.
Class test (50%) 2 hours which will assess learning outcomes 1, 3 and 4.

Network Analysis programme such as PSCAD/EMTDC software.
