Module Additional Assessment Details
Coursework (30%) Comprising two practical assignments, equally weighted - which will assess Learning Outcomes 3 and 4.
1 x 3 hour final examination (70%) which will assess Learning Outcomes 1 and 2 and 3.

EELECTRICAL POWER
-General arrangement of power systems, per unit notation, calculation of system voltages, fault calculations.
-Single-phase transformers: core losses, operation and equivalent circuits, transformer tests and parameter evaluation, parallel operation, Introduction to three-phase transformers.
- Transmission lines and cables: Structure and parameters of lines and coaxial cables, calculation of inductance and capacitance, short and medium lines, nominal T and ¿ Equivalent circuits, voltage regulation, voltage distribution of insulator sting, string efficiency, bundle conductors, size of cables.
MACHINES
-DC Machines: principles of operation, emf and torque equations. Power stages. DC motor starter. Speed and load characteristics.
-Three-Phase Synchronous Machines: principles of operation. Torque produced by the motor. Methods of starting a 3-phase motor. Equivalent circuit and phased diagram of generator.
-Three-Phase Induction Machines: principle of operation. Synchronous speed, slip and frequency of rotor current. Equivalent circuit. Power flow diagram. Torque equation.
DRIVES
- Power Electronics: Brief introduction to power semiconductor devices, basic principles of phase control, basic principles of switched mode inverters.
- Single-phase and three-phase AC motor drives.
- DC motor drives.
