Module Details
Module Indicative Content
1) Evolution of the Modern Power System. DC Systems, AC systems, DC vs AC, battle, Electricity Supply Industry, Privatisation, National Grid and the Interconnection, system components, types of generation, renewable energy sources, energy storage, environmental aspects of electrical energy, energy utilisation, basic structure of the power system.

2) Basic Concepts. Concepts of active and reactive power, three phase systems, current and voltage relations, power system representation, single line diagrams, introduction to the per unit system.

3) Power Generation and the Synchronous Machine. Round rotor and salient pole machines, simple equivalent circuit, principal steady state characteristics, power angle characteristics and the infinite bus concept, parallel operation.

4) Transmission Lines and Cables. Structure and parameters of lines and cables, inductance, capacitance, calculation of inductance and capacitance, insulators, bundled conductors, DC cables, size of cables.

5) Basic Understanding of the IEE regulations.

Coursework (50%) comprising one investigative assignment and an essay which will assess learning outcomes 1 and 4
End exam (50%) 2 hours which will assess learning outcomes 2 and 3

Electrical power laboratory equipment and simulation facilities.
Module Learning Strategies
Classroom lectures and tutorials (27 hours) will form the main teaching activity. Laboratory sessions and simulations (9 hours) will be used as learning exercises leading to one extended assignment. Two industrial visits; one to a generating station and the other to the centre for alternative energy.

This module may be delivered full-time on a block delivery basis by West Cheshire College.
