A 2 hour examination (70%) which will assess Learning Outcomes 1 and 3.
A laboratory based assignment and formal report (1,500 words approx) which will assess Learning Outcomes 2, 3 and 4.
Module Indicative Content
- Fibre principles and Technology: fibre types, dispersion and loss mechanisms.
- Passive and active optical fibre components for communications.
- Principles of laser and photodiodes.
- Optical transmitters and receivers.
- Optical multiplexing and optical amplification.
- Optical systems, networking and planning and applications.
Module Learning Strategies
Independent study:-
Reading, team meetings, information gathering, student centred learning, assignment preparation and presentation (114 hours).
Learning on all aspects of the indicative content will be faciltated by:-
Classroom based lectures and tutorials, laboratory based practical experimental (36 hours)
