Application of semiconductor devices and components in the high voltage environment: Static and Dynamic Characteristics, Series and parallel operation, damping components.
HVDC Converters: analysis, operation. Advanced concepts and topologies, HVDC light.
Static Var Compensators (SVC): analysis and operation
Thyristor controlled Reactor, Thyristor Switched capacitor, STATCOM.
Introduction to Multilevel converters.
Design of High Voltage valves (switches) for HVDC and SVC systems.
Testing of High Voltage valves
Module Additional Assessment Details
1) An assignment 1500 words 50%, learning outcomes 1, 3 and 4
2) Two hour written examination 50%, learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4.
