Module Learning Strategies
Directed reading and learning, possibly class attendance.
Information gathering (Internet, books, technical articles, patents, company catalogues and literature, etc).
Technical discussions with experts and specialists in Industry and University.
In-depth problem analysis and solution (analytical, experimental, and/or numerical).
Use of existing specialist software packages (technical, business, math, word-processing, database, project scheduling, etc).
In-depth experimental work (industrial, academic, including computer simulations).
Report writing at a professional level.
Preparation of oral presentation (and feedback on preparations).
Presentation and defence of work at seminars.
Module Indicative Content
In-depth exposure to a range of specialist technical issues at the forefront of technology within a limited range of topic areas in the chosen field of study.

Application of a range of complex specialist research techniques to the in-depth analysis of complex specialist problems in a limited range of topic areas within the chosen field of study.

Generation of highly innovative solutions to a range of complex specialist problems in a limited range of topic areas within the chosen field of study. These solutions will take into account stakeholders such as users, producers, and customers, and also the rapid change in technological innovation.

Extensive use of oral, written, and electronic communication at an advanced level to find specialist information and to explain, debate and present highly complex arguments, proposals, and ideas while adapting to different audiences and circumstances.
Module Additional Assessment Details
The content of submitted reports and the content of presentations to a mixed audience of professional engineers, technologists, and students.

100% in-class assessment is in effect as follows:-

- Written solutions to problem assignments - 35%, learning outcome 1, 2 and 3.
- 4000 word report on selected specialist study topic - 35%, learning outcomes 3 and 4.
- 20 minute seminar presentation of report contents - 30%, learning outcomes 4 and 5.
Satisfactory performance in all elements of assessment is requierd to pass this module.
