INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module aims to develop your skills and knowledge to help support your learning as a Masters student. There are two aspects to the module. The first aspect of the module focuses on the applied/practical skills that are necessary to study effectively at postgraduate level. This includes topics such as:
• Use of the Virtual Learning Environment and an introduction to TurnItIn
• Navigating and searching digital libraries,
• Effective methods and tools for academic referencing an d an understanding of the plagiarism regulations
• Completion of a skills audit
• Concept/mind mapping tools and techniques
• Time management
• Skills for independent study, exam techniques, assessment submission
• Techniques for group working
• Presentation skills
• How to make the most of the support that is available.
The second aspect of the module focuses on your career plans and enhancing employability skills. You will create a personalised career plan and look at topics such as creating CVs, interview skills, psychometric testing and applying for a placement.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
This is a zero CATs rated module. You will be required to demonstrate engagement with the module and may be withdrawn if you do not meet the engagement requirements. Engagement will be demonstrated through attendance, contributions to the taught sessions and the satisfactory completion of a portfolio. The portfolio will consist of tasks, exercises and on line tests, carried out weekly, and confirmed as satisfactory by the tutor. Failure to complete and submit the portfolio will be regarded as evidence of non engagement.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
The learning strategies reflect the learning outcomes and the tasks that you will complete. You will attend formal lectures and will also work in practical/tutorial groups. Contact time will be 3 hours per week for 12 weeks. It is expected that you will study in your own time and complete at least 114 hours of independent study. A range of learning strategies will be used but the emphasis is on practical skills and communication and you will be expected to take part in group discussions and complete relevant tasks.
