Module Details
Indicative Content
During this module you will concentrate on the interface between physical and virtual prototypes. You will gain practical experience of using laser scanning and coordinate measurement techniques to capture physical models into the virtual design environment as well as rapid prototyping and CNC machining techniques which can be used to generate physical models direct from CAD models. Finally a new and exciting method of design in CAD using haptic (touch sensitive) modelling devices such as PHANTOM FREEFORM virtual clay from sensible technologies.

You will study the following topics

Digital sketching tools and techniques. Sketching and rendering exercises.
Sketch modelling using foam and other materials
3D Scanning. Scanner Operation, Data Healing Techniques, Integration with CAD/RP
Haptic Modelling. Principles of haptic (touch sensitive) CAD modelling, Integration with RP
Subdivision modelling. Demo of techniques which can be used as an alternative to solid/surface modelling.
Rapid Prototyping. Data Transfer, STL file format, RP Systems, RP Tooling, RP Applications
Computer Aided Part Programming. CNC Milling demonstration, Machine Definition, Tooling Definition, Tool path Creation, Post processing, Program upload
Learning Strategies
This module will enable students to gain understanding, apply knowledge, analyse and evaluate problems and create solutions through a variety of activities, including laboratories where teaching of software, demonstrations, practical exercises will be undertaken.
Resources
CAD software of an industrial standard capable of subdivision or surface modelling (e.g. Parametric Technology’s CREO Parametric)
Large format touchscreen and associated sketching software e.g. Wacom Cintiq
3D Scanner hardware and software (e.g. FARO Scanarm)
Additive manufacturing hardware and software (e.g. Objet30 Pro)
CAM software of an industrial standard capable of surface machining (e.g. Parametric Technology’s CREO Parametric)
3 axis CNC machine (e.g. Kryle)
Haptic modelling hardware and software (e.g. PHANTOM FREEFORM virtual clay)
Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the methods by which physical and virtual prototypes can be integrated together into a structured product development process. (AHEP 3: EA1i, P2i, D1i, D4i, G1)

2. Develop (through problem based lab works) methods of determining the best solution to a given problem. (AHEP 3:D3, P2i, EA1i)

3. Select an appropriate prototyping method and apply this to a given product development situation.
(AHEP 3:SM1i, EA1i, P1i, P2i, D1i, D3, D4i)
A portfolio equivalent to 3000 word which records the experiences of the module and critically appraises the effectiveness of each technique and its suitably for an industrial situation (100% covering all learning outcomes). Meeting AHEP 3 Outcomes SM1i, EA1i, D1i, D3, D4i, P2i, G1.

Formative guidance and feedback will be provided in tutorial sessions within the class
