Module Details
INDICATIVE CONTENT
The module considers product specific standards and how they impact on product design and testing, and more general standards that are either mandatory or voluntary for a company to comply with. It also addresses the mandatory legislation that a company or organisation must comply with.
The module will discuss professional ethics including the Engineering Council’s Statement of Ethical Principals and the rules of conduct of professional bodies. Students will be required to identify how these ethical requirements are implemented in the work place.

Product specific standards
General standards
Legislation including personnel, health and safety, contracts, intellectual property rights, product safety and liability
Professional ethics
The role of professional bodies

For apprentices enrolled on an engineering degree apprenticeship this module supports the development of relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
The learning strategy for this module will include 6 hours of introductory lectures followed by a period of work-based learning to develop the knowledge necessary to complete the assessments. During the work-based learning period support will be provided by regular on line one to one meetings with the module tutor.

Learning Outcomes
1. Evaluate legislation and standards which are applicable to products and the working environment. (AHEP 3: EL5, EL6, P5)

2. Demonstrate a knowledge of the professional and Ethical requirements of an Engineer. (AHEP 3: EL1, EL2, P6)

3. Reflect on experience in the workplace to show how standards, legislation and ethics are applied. (AHEP 3: EL1, EL2, EL6)
Assessment Details
A written 3000 word report identifying the mandatory and voluntary standards and legislation which are applicable to the student’s company and its products. This should demonstrate a basic understanding of the requirements of the standards and legislation and explain the difference between legislative and non-legislative requirements. The report should also discuss how professional and ethical standards are applied in the workplace.

Weighted at 100% of the overall module mark and addressing learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3. Meeting AHEP 3 Outcomes EL1, EL2, EL5, EL6, P5, P6.

For apprentices enrolled on an engineering degree apprenticeship this assignment may be used to provide evidence of the development of relevant knowledge, skills, and behaviours.
