Application
Module Additional Assessment Details
A 1 hour reading and writing assessment where you will be provided with written texts on a topic related to your discipline. You will be required to summarise the main information from the text and then to give your own opinion on this issue. (LO 1,2) – 25% - Part 1 - 100 words and Part 2 - 250 words.
A ten minute oral assessment where you will present a professional situation of your own choice (subject to tutor approval) and will then respond to questions from your tutor on your chosen topic. (LO 3) – 25%
A 3 hour Password English test where you will be assessed on your level of English competence in the four basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will be required to attain the level equivalent to IELTS 6.0 /Common European Framework B2. (LO 4) – 50%.
Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to prepare you for further study in the area of your chosen discipline by introducing you to different teaching and learning methods you will encounter in university life. This will provide you with the skills for successful study, both in class and independently, developing your academic English language ability in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and subject-specific language and vocabulary drawing on academic sources relating to your field.
During this module you will:
Be provided you with the necessary skills in reading and writing to be able to interpret and produce recognisable academic discourse in your chosen field
Learn the skills and strategies required to identify and source reading and research texts appropriately
Develop the necessary listening skills to follow lectures, seminars and small-group teaching.
To develop your grammar and vocabulary, allowing you to express yourself with accuracy and complexity in a range of contexts and on a range of topics, particularly within your chosen field
Learn to approach topics, issues and texts in a critical manner.
Module Learning Strategies
You will be working in class and groups practising the skills you need for the assessment. You will engage in discussion with other students in English, increasing your vocabulary and understanding of your chosen field of study.
You may participate in seminars and group discussions, talking about various academic topics (linked where possible with the academic lectures you have heard). These activities will help you to improve your English level in the four basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and to apply this knowledge in the academic area.
You'll also start to develop study skills that will help you to get the most out of being at university.
