Tutors will also be available for advice on assignments via email and in person through office hours. Where appropriate, students will be encouraged to use Blackboard for this module and add their portfolios to their PDP profile at the end of the module.
Module Texts
Rob Pope, The English Studies Book (Routledge, 2002)
David lodge The Art of Fiction (Penguin, 1992)
Terry Eagleton How to Read a Poem (Blackwell, 2007)
Module Indicative Content
The module focuses on the development of close reading skills and essay writing skills. Students will be introduced to different literary genres (other than the novel) and some key terms for literary study. The module will also focus on intensive training in how to write university level essays in literary criticism - a process which will involve critiquing anonymous student essays from previous years.

The module will also engage students in 2 individual meetings with personal tutors to develop writing skills, pick up on any personal issues the student may be experiencing and forge good student-tutor relations. In each meeting, students will discuss an essay plan and a 200 word introductory paragraph with their personal tutor.

The learning diary will show reflection on these discussions and some sense of how the student will develop upon the advice given.

Students will have to use the Blackboard online system as part of this module.

Students will be encouraged to add their Study Skills portfolio to their PDP profiles.
