Module Additional Assessment Details
100% Coursework will take the form of a Portfolio; 2000 words
This is designed to encourage the development of a number of key skills, for example close reading, and writing skills (e.g. writing accurately and analytically). The Portfolio will assess all the learning outcomes. [LO 1,2,3,4]
Module Learning Strategies
There will be weekly participatory lectures and workshops which will provide students with necessary contextual information and ideas. These will be followed by seminars-partly tutor-led, partly student-led-closely related to the plays. Opportunities will be provided for the development of key skills, especially close reading in preparation for seminars, and also oral communication in seminars themselves, where full student participation will be a central concern. Wider cultural and historical issues arising from the plays will develop from a careful initial study of the texts. Coursework will be linked to these discussions, and will be built into a portfolio of work.
Module Indicative Content
This module aims to develop techniques of close reading and analysis, whilst introducing students to the drama of the Elizabethan/Jacobean period. It is expected that some insight will be achieved into the issues raised by the drama by means of a study of domestic and social themes (e.g. the exercise of patriarchal power, conflicts-racial, ethnic, religious) as presented in the plays discussed.
Gender issues are of particular interest in these plays-e.g. the place of women in marriage, -and the related matter of patriarchal (and state ) authority. Also of interest is what we are shown, in the plays, of attitudes towards money, its acquisition and power.
Examples of Texts:
Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice
Jonson: Volpone
