Module Indicative Content
The module will introduce students to the literature of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a foundational period for any degree programme in English literature. Students will analyse representative texts from the principal genres of poetry, drama and prose, in relation to genre, style and form, and the external influences of the broader culture and society. Study texts may include the following: William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice; Sonnets; the metaphysical poetry of Donne and Marvell; Daniel Defoe, Moll Flanders. The module workshops will develop the core skills of textual analysis and interpretation in the light of historical and contextual awareness, in keeping with the broader pedagogical aims of the Level 4 English programme.
