INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module attempts to fill a much-needed gap in our programme: teaching students how to write clearly and effectively. The first half of the module concentrates entirely on the basics of written English (punctuation, syntax, paragraphing etc). The second half of the module moves on to the more sophisticated skills of research, essay structure and the means of engaging in academic discourse. A variety of well-established text books will be used for the first half of the module (e.g. Elements of Style by Strunk and White), but the main sources used on this course will be the experience of tutors and some sample essays.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Teaching will be delivered by weekly 2-hour workshops, with a rotating selection of tutors. The module will draw heavily on a combination of group-work activities and individual, informal class tests allowing students to assess their own needs and progress. Sample essays will be used as examples for discussion and correction in class.
